Japan’s Minami Kawashima brushed aside two home favourites today to book her place in the main draw of the women’s singles competition at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open Grand Prix in Vladivostok.

Kawashima opened qualification at the Sport Hall Olympic with an easy 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 victory over Alisa Korzhinskaia before thrashing Anastasiia Onasenko 11-4, 11-0, 11-2.

Her reward is a first-round meeting with another Russian, Julia Zapolskaya.

Three other players advanced to the main draw today after coming through all-Russian encounters.

Ekaterina Nesterenko claimed an 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 11-6 win over Marina Dremina, who earned her place in the match by earlier overcoming compatriot Inga Budarina 12-10, 11-7, 11-5.

Polina Makkoveeva registered a 13-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-4 victory over Vitaliya Chigintseva, who had progressed to the final qualification stage with an 11-8, 11-7, 3-11, 11-9 success at the expense of fellow Russian Ekaterina Khmelj.

Joining Nesterenko and Makkoveeva in the main draw is Viktoriia Vorobeva after she was handed a walkover win from her scheduled contest against Alina Romanko.

The men's competition does not feature a qualification stage. 

Action in Vladivostok is due to continue tomorrow.

The US Open, another Grand Prix Gold event, will also begin at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Home favourite Beiwen Zhang is the top seed in the women's singles, with Lee Hyun-il installed as favourite in the men's competition.
