The Opening Ceremony began the 23rd edition of the Summer Deaflympics in Turkish city Samsun today.

A Parade of Nations was the highlight of proceedings at the Canik 19 Mayis Stadium.

More than 3,000 athletes from 97 countries will take part at the premier event for deaf athletes in the Black Sea city.

They will compete in 20 sports - athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, road cycling, football, golf, handball, judo, karate, mountain bike, orienteering, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

The first sporting action also took place today, as three women's football matches were played.

There was a disappointment for the hosts as Turkey lost 4-1 to Brazil at 19 Mayis Stadium in Group A.

Elsewhere in the Group, Poland beat Britain 2-0 at Carsamba Stadium.

At Bafra Stadium, Russia demolished China 9-0.

Seven sports will begin their competitions tomorrow.

Thirteen days of action will conclude on July 30, with the event run by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf.
