Nils Glatthard has been appointed as the new director of operations at the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA).

The Swiss, who is based in Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland Alps, began in the full-time position on July 10. 

He is a member of the Swiss Alpine Club and comes from a mountaineering family.

His father founded the Mountaineering School of Meiringen and Yannick, one of his three sons, competes as an ice climber. 

In his new role, Glatthard will manage and coordinate the UIAA office in Swiss capital Bern.

He will assist the work of the UIAA Commissions and help implement projects outlined in the governing body's strategic plan for 2017 to 2020.

Other tasks include assisting the accountant and treasurer in setting budgets and financial reports, and becoming the principle liaison between key members of staff.

"I am excited to contribute to the development and evolution of the UIAA," said Glatthard. 

"I see great potential in the federation's three core pillars of activity - safety, sport and sustainability - and am enthusiastic about working with the UIAA community, and notably our member federations, as a whole."

Glatthard speaks German, English and French.

He has a degree in tourism and travel management from the University of St Gallen, and has experience delivering mountain-based sporting events.
