France’s Steven Fauvel Clinch was crowned as the men’s decathlon champion on the second day of the World Under-18 Athletics Championships in Nairobi.

The Frenchman began the day in the lead, after impressing in the opening five disciplines yesterday at Moi International Sports Centre in the Kenyan capital.

Clinch produced the fastest time in the 110m hurdles by clocking 13.94sec, but he relinquished top spot to Latvia’s Olegs Kozjakovs in the discus.

The pair switched places again after the pole vault, where Clinch achieved an effort of 4.50 metre.

He was able to remain in first place after throwing 48.08m in the javelin before sealing gold by winning the 1,500m in 4min 48.61sec.

The French athlete finished the decathlon with a total of 7,559 points, with Kozjakovs taking silver on 7,377.

Germany’s Leo Neugebauer rounded off the podium on 7,204.

The women’s 100m final concluded with Mizgin Ay of Turkey winning the gold medal, as she powered to victory in 11.62.

She won on a photo finish against Magdalena Stefanowicz, with the Polish athlete ending on the same time as the winner.

Kevona Davis of Jamaica won bronze in 11.67.

Timo Northoff secured victory for Germany in the men’s shot put by achieving a throw of 20.72m.

Belarus’ Mikhail Samuseu finished second on 19.99m, while a personal best 19.93m saw South Africa’s Jonathan de Lacey Lacey win bronze.

The men’s long jump saw Cuba achieve a one-two, with Maikel Vidal winning the event with a leap of 7.88m.

His team-mate Lester Lescay took silver by jumping 7.79m, with Andreas Sameul Bucsa of Romania taking the bronze by with a mark of 7.47m.

China’s Zhekai Liu was crowned the men’s javelin champion by throwing a personal best 77.54m.

He was followed by South Africa’s Johannes Schlebusch and China’s Qiagshu Song, who managed 75.68m and 73.64m respectively.

In response to security fears in Kenya in the build-up to the event, the country's Government has imposed extra cordons around the venue.

All vehicles travelling to the facility must undergo security checking more than 100m away from the stadium, while additional police officers are in attendance.

There are of concerns of escalating violence across Kenya prior to the country's Presidential elections in August, while the threat of terrorism also remains high.

Six countries - the United States, Australia, Britain, Switzerland, New Zealand and Canada - all withdrew prior to the event due to security fears.

Al Shabaab, a militant group in Somalia opposed to their home country's Government, have also issued public threats to Kenya as a result of their military intervention in the nation.

Back in 2013, the group killed 67 people at Nairobi's Westgate Shopping Mall.

Those involved in a shooting at Garissa University College in 2015, where almost 150 people lost their lives, also claimed to be representing Al Shabaab.
