Britain's Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre moved into the outright lead in the women’s competition at the 470 World Championships at the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki.

The pair won every race in the women's yellow group yesterday, while the blue fleet was headed by Slovenians Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol.

Mills, who won Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and the world title in 2012 in Barcelona alongside Saskia Clark, finished third and fifth in today’s two races with new partner McIntyre.

With their fifth place discarded, the British crew have a total of six points for the regatta after two days.

Mrak and Macarol lie second on eight points, having finished third and 14th in their two races today.

Today’s races brought an end to the qualification stage, with the top 30 women’s teams advancing to the finals, which will run until the medal race on July 15.

A total of 36 men’s crews also advanced to be part of the gold fleet, with Sweden’s Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergstrom continuing to set the pace.

They claimed victory in the first men’s yellow fleet race of the day, before ending as the runners-up in the second.

With two victories and a second place yesterday, Dahlberg and Bergstrom now have five points in the competition.

Their nearest rivals currently have double their tally of points, with London 2012 Olympic champions Mathew Belcher and William Ryan of Australia lying second.

The Rio 2016 silver medallists, who are three-time 470 world champions, earned one win today and a fourth place finish.

They are tied with Austria’s David Bargehr and Lukas Mähr, who also have 10 points.

The 470 event is the first sailing World Championship of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle.

Action continues tomorrow, with the medal races scheduled for July 15.
