Canada secured their maiden International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Under-19 World Cup title as they beat Italy 79-60 in the final in Cairo.

R.J. Barrett inspired Canada to their first crown at youth level with a game-high total of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Barrett also made four assists in the final on his way to being crowned the tournament's most valuable player.

He finished the event in the Egyptian capital with 21.6 points, along with 8.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals.

The 17-year-old also headed the All-Star Five Awards, which included his Canada teammate Abu Kigab, Italians Lorenzo Bucarelli and Tommaso Oxilia and Payton Pritchard of the United States.

David Okeke was the star performer for the Italian team in the showpiece match but his haul of 14 points and 10 rebounds proved to be in vain.

The pattern continued after the restart as they went 69-48 ahead in the third.

Italy outscored Canada 12-10 in the final quarter but it mattered little as Canada wrapped up the title in style.

The US claimed third place with a comprehensive 96-72 success over Spain, while Germany finished fifth by beating Lithuania 80-74.
