Italy won two gold medals as finals began in non-Olympic classes today at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne.

It came in the final World Cup regatta of the 2017 season on the Rotsee course.

The Italians first triumphed in the lightweight men's quadruple sculls after Matteo Mulas, Martino Goretti, Andrea Micheletti and Catello Amarante set a World Cup record of 5min 48.39sec.

A superb second half of the race saw them power clear of France, in 5:49.860, as Czech Republic took bronze in 5:53.69.

“I think it was one of our best races," said Micheletti.

"We started a little bit slowly, but we really increased speed towards the end.

"From 1000 metres, we just tried to keep the same pace until the finish.”

Federico Duchich, Leone Barbara, Lorenzo Tedesco and Piero Sfiligoi sealed a second success for the Italians in the lightweight four.

They clocked 5:53.84 to edge out Russia by 0.26.

Germany took a distant bronze in 5:58.520.
