Chou Tien Chen completed his successful title defence at the Badminton World Federation Chinese Taipei Open today in front of a home crowd.

He was pushed hard by compatriot Tzu Wei Wang in the men’s singles final at the Taipei Arena as the match took 1 hour 15min to complete.

Tzu got the better of the defending champion in the first 21-18 and was close claiming the second as well.

However, Chen fought back and nicked it 21-19 to set up a third set which he won 21-15.

The women’s singles final was also played today between Japan’s Saena Kawakami and Malaysian third seed Goh Jin Wei.

With her slightly higher world ranking of 44th compared to 59th, the latter player will perhaps have been seen as the favourite for the title.

But it was not going to be her day as 19-year-old Kawakami pulled off a 21-17, 21-17 victory in 39 minutes.
