World number one Sir Andy Murray has confirmed he is fit to defend his men’s singles crown at this year’s Wimbledon Championships due to start tomorrow.

The Briton, who is the top seed in the men's draw, has been suffering from a sore hip which forced him to pull out of two exhibition matches at London’s Hurlingham Club in the last week which were supposed to help him prepare for the Grand Slam.

However, despite being seen struggling with the pain from the injury during practice sessions at the All England Club, where the tournament is held, the double Olympic gold medallist has today said he will be able to play, adding that his hip has felt “much better” recently.

“I’ve had hip problems since I was very young,” the 30-year-old told reporters.

“If I feel like I do today, I’ll be fine to play the tournament.

“I’ll be fine to play seven matches.”

The news comes after it was revealed Murray and his wife Kim Sears are expecting their second child.

Murray, who also won the title in 2013, is set to face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, who entered the draw as a lucky loser, in the first round tomorrow.

The match will be the first on Centre Court at the tournament and is due to begin at 1pm local time.

They will be followed up by the match featuring Petra Kvitova.

The two-time women’s singles champion from the Czech Republic is appearing at Wimbledon after making a successful return from injury when she was stabbed in her left hand by an assailant who got into her home.

She faces Sweden’s Johanna Larsson in the first round.

French Open men’s singles champion Rafael Nadal will be playing on Court One, with the fourth seed from Spain taking on Australia’s John Millman.

The tournament is due to finish on July 16.
