Lee Dae-hoon claimed the men’s 68 kilograms title at the World Taekwondo Championships here today to take host nation South Korea’s gold medal tally to three for the event.

The 25-year-old, who triumphed in the men’s 63kg category at the 2011 and 2013 editions of the sport’s flagship event, beat Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Jen 26-8 in a one-sided final.

Lee dominated the contest from start to finish, establishing a 9-0 lead by the end of the first period before winning the second and third 8-4 and 9-4 respectively.

"I am so happy to win the title at such a great venue," Lee was reported as saying by Yonhap.

"And I think I was able to get the gold thanks to the support of so many Korean fans here."

Lee had earlier registered a 23-6 semi-final win over Bulgaria’s Vladimir Dalakliev, one of the two bronze medallists.

Joining Dalakliev on the third step of the podium was Jordan’s Rio 2016 Olympic champion Ahmad Abughaush, who lost 9-4 to Huang in the other semi-final.

Also winning a gold medal today was Turkey’s Nur Tatar after she came from 2-1 down in the third and last period of the women’s 67kg final to beat the United States' Paige McPherson 6-4.

Two successful kicks and a punch saw the 2015 runner-up establish a 6-2 lead and although McPherson managed to pull two points back, it proved to be in vain.

McPherson, meanwhile, put herself within one win of the gold medal by producing a dramatic late comeback to beat China’s Zhang Mengyu 6-5.

As the two beaten semi-finalists, Kim and Zhang were the bronze medallists.
