New Zealand won the final event of the Women's World Rugby Sevens Series in Clermont-Ferrand in France and were crowned as overall champions in the process.

The Kiwis have been dominant all season and won their fifth event out of six at the Stade Gabriel Montpied.

Their 31-7 victory over Fiji in the quarter-finals today ensured they could not be caught in the overall race and they then went on to finish the campaign in style.

They saw off hosts France 21-7 in the last four and then beat rivals Australia - last season's overall champions and the Olympic gold medallists - 22-7 in the final.

Victory in Clermont added to successes in Dubai, Las Vegas, Kitakyushu and Langford this season.

New Zealand's head coach Allan Bunting said: "The ladies have been top quality all season and it wasn’t enough for us to win the Series, we wanted to win the round too.

"Now we're looking ahead to next year - we've got the World Cup and qualifying for the Olympics to do."

Canada were the only other team to win a tournament this season, in Sydney in February.

They were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Australia today, 19-14.

Other quarter-finals saw Australia beat the United States 31-14, Canada see off Ireland 31-0 and France beat Russia 10-7.

New Zealand collected another 20 points for winning the tournament to finish the season on 116.

Australia ended on 100 in second position, with two more points than third-placed Canada.
