Olympic champion Evgeny Tishchenko of Russia defended his European Boxing Championships title as he won the heavyweight gold medal with a comfortable victory over Cheavan Clarke of England in Kharkiv.

All four reigning champions still in contention on the final day of the event in the Ukrainian city retained their respective crowns as action concluded at the Lokomotiv Sports Palace.

Tischenko has been in superb form throughout the event and continued that trend with a dominant unanimous win against Clarke in the heavyweight final.

Vasilii Egorov, also of Russia, was made to work hard to keep hold of his light flyweight gold medal as he was pushed all the way by England's Galal Yafai.

The Russian boxer, a World Championships silver medallist, claimed victory by the narrowest of margins as he prevailed by split decision, with three of the five judges awarding him the contest.

Reigning flyweight champion Daniel Asenov of Bulgaria had a similarly difficult task as he beat England's Niall Farrell in the final, also by split decision.

Joe Ward of Ireland secured his second straight continental light heavyweight crown in some style as he cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory against Russian opponent Muslim Gadzhimagomedov, a late call-up for the event after Georgy Kushitashvili was denied entry to host country Ukraine prior to the competition.

He was one of nine members of the Russian delegation reportedly prevented from entering for "illegally" visiting Crimea.

Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and Ukraine's capital Kyiv has imposed travel bans on numerous Russian politicians and celebrities who have since visited.

Elsewhere, Peter McGrail clinched England's sole gold medal on the final day of the event as he outfought Mykola Butsenko of the Ukraine to top the podium in the bantamweight division.

Iurii Shestak delivered success for the host nation by winning the lightweight title thanks to a comprehensive 4-1 triumph against Gabil Mamedov of Russia in the final.

Oleksandr Khyzhniak then sealed a second gold medal for the Ukraine, sweeping aside Kamran Shakhsuvarly of Azerbaijan at middleweight.

Super heavyweight Viktor Vykhryst made it a Ukrainian hat-trick in the final bout of the night as he beat England's Joseph Clarke by unanimous decision.

Armenia’s Hovhannes Bachkov claimed the light welterweight honours with victory over Luke McCormack, while the Englishman's brother Pat also had to settle for silver as he lost 4-1 to Abass Baraou of Germany in the final of the welterweight tournament.
