Grozny has been shortlisted by FIFA as a possible team base camp for next year's World Cup in Russia, despite a number of Governments advising against travel to the Chechen Republic due to concerns over security in the region.

A catalogue containing 65 potential bases, within five geographical "clusters", has been produced by FIFA and the Local Organising Committee for the 32 teams contesting next year's tournament.

The five-star Hotel Grozny City is one of 19 locations available in the southern cluster, near the host city of Volgograd.

It is promoted as being nine kilometres from Grozny Airport and 5.8km from the recommended training base.

Although Chechnya has been free of conflict in recent years, the UK Foreign Office are advising "against all travel to Chechnya".

FIFA sources have told ESPN FC that several countries, including Belgium, Brazil, England, Germany and Sweden, have already spent time in Russia in search of possible locations for base camps at the 2018 World Cup.

England manager Gareth Southgate is in Russia this week for a World Cup research trip, with Saint Petersburg and Moscow thought to be the Football Association’s preferred locations for a training base should they qualify.

There are 23 bases on offer in and around Moscow, due to stage games at the Luzhniki Stadium - where the final will take place - and Spartak Moscow's newly-opened Otkrytiye Arena.

Other countries who have already visited Russia reportedly have a preference for bases in the south of the country, such as Krasnodar, Rostov and Sochi, because of the more predictable climate there.

Competing countries are expected to wait until after the World Cup draw, scheduled to take place in the Kremlin in Moscow on December 1, before confirming their bases.

This is due to the distances between host cities.

In October 2013, anti-racist group "NEVER AGAIN", entered into cooperation with the Inter-ethnic Football League in Moscow to try to help combat racism and discrimination in Russia, in the build up to the 2018 World Cup.

The announcement came after Zenit St Petersburg fans controversially burned a Chechen flag in the previous month’s home game against Terek Grozny.

This was the latest episode in a series of racial and homophobic incidents seen by Zenit fans.

Terek Grozny have played in the Russian Premier League since 2007 and have staged matches in Grozny since 2008.

The club was recently re-named Akhmat Grozny by owner Ramzan Kadyrov, after his father Akhmat.
