The Netherlands secured top spot in Pool B as they edged India at the Hockey World League semi-final event in London.

The Dutch team began the contest impressively at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Thierry Brinkman and Sander Baart struck early to give The Netherlands a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Mirco Pruyser extended the advantage at the start of the second, but India’s Akashdeep Singh pulled one back before half-time.

Neither side were able to find the net in the second half with the Dutch holding on for a 3-1 win to seal their fourth straight success.

India would have to settle for second in the pool, while Canada drew 1-1 with Scotland to finish third in the standings.

The draw would see Scotland miss out on a quarter-final berth, with Pakistan qualifying instead.

They will face the winners of Pool A, Olympic champions Argentina.

The South Americans could have been overtaken had England overcome bottom placed side South Korea by a significant scoreline.

England would win the contest 7-2, but it was only enough to secure second and a quarter-final tie with Canada.

Malaysia and China were assured of quarter-final spots after South Korea's loss.

A 5-1 win for Malaysia over China saw them set up a clash with India in the last eight, while China take on The Netherlands.

All quarter-final matches will be held on Thursday (June 22).

The Women's Hockey World League Semi-Final will begin tomorrow in Brussels.

Hosts Belgium will play in Pool B with Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Spain.

China, Italy, South Korea, The Netherlands and Scotland will contest Pool A.
