Serbia made a good start to their title defence on day one of the 2017 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 World Cup in France.

The reigning champions won both of their Group A matches on the Parc des Chantiers in Nantes.

It was not as easy as they would have anticipated though with both Egypt and Russia providing stern tests.

They eventually beat the Africans 17-15 before extending their 100 per cent record with a 20-17 win over the Russians.

Seeded fifth in the men's event, The Netherlands also won both of their matches today in Group D.

The 2016 Europe Cup bronze medallists first thrashed South Korea 22-6 before edging the United States, last year's World Cup silver medallists, 19-12.

It was a mixed day for the Americans though as they responded to that defeat by beating Indonesia 21-8.

Last year's silver medallists, Ukraine, made an indifferent start in the women's event.

In their opening match they cruised past Australia 21-12 in Group C.

However, in their second contest they were beaten 17-12 by The Netherlands.

The Dutch enjoyed a great day as they added to that win with a 16-9 victory over Japan.

France, seeded second on home soil, lost their opening Group B match 15-13 to Switzerland.

Roared on by the home crowd, they did manage to win their second though after recording a 17-9 win over Turkmenistan.

The World Cup is the first major 3x3 tournament since the sport became an Olympic event.

It was confirmed last week by the International Olympic Committee that 3x3 will make its Games debut at Tokyo 2020.

Action will continue tomorrow when Groups C and B take to the court in the men's event and A and D begin their women's campaigns.
