Russia experienced mixed fortunes in today’s finals at the European Fencing Championships in Tbilisi, beating Ukraine in the men’s team épée event but losing to Italy in the women’s team foil competition. 

Having defeated Germany 45-30 in the semi-finals, Russia’s men’s épée team narrowly overcame Ukraine 33-32 to secure top honours at the Georgian capital’s Gymnastic Arena.

Germany went on to lose 23-22 in the bronze medal match against Czech Republic, who were beaten 18-14 by Ukraine in the other last-four encounter.

The women’s team foil final saw Italy defeat Russia 45-31 following a 45-36 win over Germany in the penultimate round.

Germany recovered to claim the bronze medal with a 45-18 victory over Hungary, who fell to a 45-27 defeat at the hands of Russia in the semi-finals.

Action in Tbilisi is due to conclude tomorrow when medals will be awarded in the men's sabre and women's épée team events.

The competition is offering fencers a final chance to hone their preparations before the World Championships in Leipzig.

Competition in the German city is scheduled to run from July 19 to 26.
