Gold Coast 2018 have announced that Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) will play a key role at next year's Commonwealth Games.

The beach safety and rescue authority in the Australian state are set to be involved in a "range of initiatives".

Peter Beattie, the Gold Coast 2018 chairman, said the announcement came after an "ongoing and extensive community engagement programme".

This was implemented to support the planning and preparation for Festival 2018 - the arts and culture programme surrounding the Games - and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

"Our iconic surf life savers will continue their work during Gold Coast 2018 to keep everyone safe, however they will also play an important role in elements of Festival 2018 and ceremonies and in welcoming athletes, officials and visitors from 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth," said Beattie.

"SLSQ is part of the fabric of our communities and I am delighted that they will be involved in Gold Coast 2018 and that extensive member training has already been initiated to prepare for the increase in visitation to the region."

The beach and the Pacific Ocean will likely be the lasting images of Gold Coast 2018.

"Being a part of one of the world's greatest sporting events presents a unique opportunity for the organisation and will certainly reinforce the role we play in educating the public about beach safety," said SLSQ chief executive John Brennan.

"Surf life savers are synonymous with Queensland so to see our members be a part of Gold Coast 2018 as it is showcased on the world stage will be a once in a lifetime and extremely memorable experience for us all."
