Cuba’s Arlen López progressed to the semi-finals of the men’s middleweight division at the AMBC American Confederation Championships in Tegucigalpa.

The Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist was the favourite heading into the contest against the United States’ Troy Isley and lived up to expectations at the Coliseum Nacional de Ingenieros in the Honduran capital.

López ended the contest in the round three, with the Cuban moving comfortably into the semi-final stage of the tournament.

He will now face the challenge of Guatemala’s Lester Martinez Tut, who secured a 4-1 points victory over Herbert da Conceição Sousa of Brazil.

A fine day for Cuban boxing continued when Yosban Veitia secured a narrow victory in the flyweight quarter-finals.

He earned a 3-2 win on points against Puerto Rico’s Yankiel Rivera Figueroa.

Venezuela’s Franklin Gonzalez will provide the opposition for Veitia in the last four, having beaten the Dominican Republic’s Victor Santillan.

There was a convincing victory for another of Cuba’s Olympic champions, with Julio César La Cruz easing into the men’s light-heavyweight semi-finals.

The Rio 2016 gold medallist faces the challenge of Colombia’s Jeysson Monroy for a place in the final.

Monroy secured a split decision 3-1 win over Venezuela’s Albert Ramirez Duran in a tightly fought contest.

As well as gold medals, competitors at the AMBC American Confederation Championships are also vying for places at the men's International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Championships in Hamburg, which run from August 25 to September 3.

Action is due to resume on Friday (June 16), with the event in Tegucigalpa due to conclude on Sunday.
