Double Olympic Alpine skiing bronze medallist Elisabeth Goergl has called time on her career at the age of 36.

The Austrian failed to qualify for the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Championships last year for the first time since 2003, stating at the time: "I think it’s time for something new, the youngsters are taking over.”

Despite recent super-G World Cup results such as seventh at Crans-Montana in February and a fifth in Aspen in March, Goergl was relegated to the A-Team of the Austrian Ski Federation for the next campaign.

During her career, Goergl won two bronze medals at Vancouver 2010 in the downhill and giant slalom disciplines.

However, her career highlight came in 2011 when the Austrian upset favourites Lindsey Vonn of the United States and Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch to win both the downhill and super-G titles at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.

She also performed a song at the championships' Opening Ceremony.

"I have taken a lot of time to think about it," said Goergl.

"Since I was 10, I have been chasing my goal to become a ski racer with huge passion.

"I never gave up and I always found new motivation."

After 15 years on the World Cup circuit, Goergl has made 378 starts, finished on 42 podiums and and claimed seven victories.
