American swimmers enjoyed a strong opening day of their home World Para Swimming World Series event in Indianapolis.

McKenzie Coan made her season debut at the event, with the swimmer competing in the S7 400 metres freestyle event.

She completed the distance in a time of 5 min 19.84sec to take victory, with Canada’s Tess Routliffe ending 30sec adrift in second.

The podium was completed by Abigail Gase, as the American ended in a time of 7:06.08.

“This is my first Paralympic meet since the Games,” said Coan.

“My goals coming here, I wanted to have solid swims and be feeling good in the water while still at high-level training.”

Success for the United States continued in the women’s S13 400m freestyle, with Rebecca Meyers winning the race in 4:30.95.

Her team-mate Madeleine Babcock would end as the runner-up in 6:02.05.

Ellie Marks was the third American winner of the day, triumphing in the women’s SB7 100m breaststroke.

She finished the event in 1:29.45, with Australia’s S6 class swimmer Tiffany Thomas Kane clocking 1:34.25 in second.

Canada’s Camille Berube finished third in 1:44.45.

Australia also enjoyed multiple victories, including success for Paralympic silver medallist Ellie Cole in the women’s S9 400m freestyle.

Cole won the event in 4:51.06, with Britain’s Toni Shaw and Australia’s Maddison Elliott rounding off the top three in 4:56.59 and 5:08.55 respectively.

Australia’s Blake Cochrane won the men’s SB7 100m breaststroke in 1:17.37, while the United States’ Lucas McCrory and Joseph Peppersack completed the podium in 1:40.61 and 1:41.21.

Daniel Fox added to Australian success, winning the men’s S14 200m freestyle in a time of 1:59.34.

His team-mate Jack Ireland and Canada’s Gordie Michie achieved times of 2:01.35 and 2:05.54 to round off the top three.

Competition will continue in Indianapolis tomorrow.
