Australia has been awarded the hosting rights to the 2017 Pacific-Asia Curling Championships (PACCs), with the event due to take place in the city of Erina in New South Wales.

It will mark the first time in 21 years that Australia has staged the Championships, having previously done so in Adelaide in 1993 and Sydney in 1996.

The Erina Ice Arena will have five sheets of ice installed for the event, which is scheduled to be held from November 2 to 9.

This will include four sheets for the international competitions and one for the public and sponsors to try out curling.

The venue is home to the Central Coast Rhinos, the local ice hockey team, and the Central Coast Figure Skating and Central Coast Ice Speed Skating clubs.

"I am delighted to confirm that we will be taking the next edition of our Pacific-Asia Curling Championships to Australia for the first time in over 20 years," World Curling Federation (WCF) President Kate Caithness said.

"November in Australia is the beginning of summer and so the event will have a different feel for the athletes, officials and travelling supporters.

"These Championships will give the Australian Curling Federation the opportunity to share the event worldwide through World Curling TV and the international media presence and hopefully will encourage more Australians to take up the sport."

The PACCs are held annually in November and qualify teams for the World Curling Championships the following year.

Two gold and silver medal-winning women’s teams from the 2017 Championships will qualify for the 2018 World Women’s Curling Championship in Canadian city North Bay from March 17 to 25.

Similarly, the top two men’s teams will secure places at the 2018 World Men’s Curling Championship, set to take place in Las Vegas in the United States from March 31 to April 8.

As well as the titles and medals that are on offer, the 2017 Championships will provide competition for those teams that have, or still can, qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, due to be held in Pyeongchang in South Korea from February 9 to 25.

The host of the event is the Erina Curling Association with Ellis Southee serving as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) chair.

Hugh Millikin, a WCF vice-president and member of the LOC, will assist Southee in the initial organising efforts.

"The Australian curling community is very excited to use the hosting of the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships to have access to world-class curling ice for the first time in Australia," Millikin said.

"Australia will host its national mixed doubles and seniors play downs in the week before the PACCs.

"Ice makers that usually convert hockey ice to curling - in 15 minutes - will be part of the ice crew to gain knowledge on how best to prepare ice in short time frames and learn the best practices for pebbling and scraping.

"The legacy for the event will be Australians having access to 'real' ice and stones.

"This event should be the first of many events Australia will bid to host in the future.

"With the fifth sheet, available for the public during the PACCs, the hope will be to expand the 200-plus curler base, not only in Sydney but throughout Australia."

Last year's PACCs saw hosts South Korea win the women's title and Japan seal the men's gold medal.

China were runners-up in both competitions at the Uiseong Curling Training Center.
