A women’s baseball league has been launched in Argentina for the first time.

The Metropolitan Women’s Baseball League has seen the first matches played in the competition with games played at the Estadio Nacional de Ezeiza in Buenos Aires.

Argentina Baseball Federation President Sergio Martin threw the ceremonial first pitch in the opening game.

The league will see five teams, all based in the nation’s capital city, contest 24 games.

After these matches are played, the top four sides will then head into the semi-final round before the final.

Plans are also in place to expand the sport for women in Argentina with more clubs set to be established with the hope of launching a national championship at some stage in the future.

Michael Schmidt, executive director at the World Baseball Softball Confederation, praised the league’s formation.

“This is another step forward in women’s baseball history and the evolution of our sport,” he said.

Baseball and softball will be making their return to the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020 after 12 years away from the Games.

Argentina have not featured in any of the Olympic competitions for the sport.
