An unbeaten 133 from Joe Root saw England begin their International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy campaign with a comfortable eight wicket win over Bangladesh today.

His knock came off 129 balls and featured 11 fours and a six as the hosts cruised past their opponent’s score of 305 with 16 deliveries left at The Oval in London during the tournament's opening match.

However, his efforts may come at a cost for his side as he injured his calf during the innings.

He was able to complete the task at hand, but the man who became England’s Test captain earlier this year appeared to be going through the pain barrier.

Alongside Root, opening batsman Alex Hales hit 95 off 86 balls and was involved in a second wicket partnership of 159 before captain Eoin Morgan helped see England to victory with a score of 75 off 61 deliveries.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal hit a century himself, finishing on 128.

The pick of the bowlers for England was Liam Plunkett as he claimed four wickets, including two in as many balls, for 59 runs off his 10 overs.

Bangladesh made a steady start after losing the toss and being made to bat on a sunny day in south London with Tamim and Soumya Sarkar putting on 56 before the latter was caught for 28 off Ben Stokes’ bowling.

Imrul Kayes got 19 before becoming Plunkett’s first victim with Mark Woods taking a stunning catch, but the visitors then added 166 runs for the third wicket as Tamim and Mushfiqar Rahim looked to be setting up a good score.

Proceedings got a bit feisty as Stokes and Tamim squared up a couple of times as frustration seemed to get to the Englishman, but Plunkett managed to get both out in consecutive balls, first getting the opener caught by Jos Buttler and then getting Mushfiqar out for 79, with Hales getting his hands to a loose shot.

This killed off the momentum for Bangladesh as they only added 44 runs from the remain 5.2 overs.

A bad start was made by England in their response as Jason Roy, who has been struggling for form, was caught excellently by Mustafizur Rahman off captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s bowling for just one run.

Any chance for the away team were extinguished though by the partnership between Root and Hales before Morgan hit a few lusty blows to get England over the line.

Tomorrow will see a repeat of the 2015 ICC World Cup final as Australia face New Zealand at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
