GB Taekwondo have paid tribute after former international athlete Caroline Facer died at the age of 34.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

During her career she won bronze in the under-53 kilograms event at the 2012 European Championships in Manchester.

Prior to that, Facer also claimed a silver medal in the under-51kg category at the 2008 edition of the continental tournament in Italian capital Rome.

She was also a reserve for Jade Jones at London 2012, where the Welsh athlete went on to claim her first Olympic gold medal.

Facer retired after competing at the 2014 Manchester World Taekwondo Grand Prix.

Britain's former world champion Sarah Stevenson, a Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, described Facer as an "incredible person and inspiration" in a post on social media.

"We are really sad to hear the news about former athlete, Caroline Facer," read a statement on GB Taekwondo's website.

"Caroline was exceptionally committed to the sport and was a charismatic athlete who gave 100 per cent in everything she did.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this difficult time."
