Jhony Corzo of Mexico sealed his country's first-ever title at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games as the event in Biarritz concluded today.

The 18-year-old star produced a superb display to make history for Mexico, taking gold with a score of 14.5 in the final.

Corzo's total proved enough to beat Joan Duru of France, who fell 0.6 adrift in second place having achieved a total of 13.9 points.

Portugal's Pedro Henrique took home the bronze medal, while the copper went to Jonathan González of Spain.

The result marked a huge triumph for both Corzo, making his ISA World Surfing Games debut, and his nation.

"It's an amazing feeling to be crowned world champion and I don't have words for it," the 18-year-old prodigy said.

"This is something that I wanted ever since I was young and started surfing.

"This is my first time competing in the ISA World Surfing Games and I got the gold.

"It's a dream come true."

France were already guaranteed the team title, with Portugal earning silver and Spain the bronze.

The French team then added the ISA Aloha Cup crown to their impressive haul from the event on home soil.

They emerged victorious in the team relay event, that included the top eight teams from last year's World Surfing Games in Costa Rica.

France and Peru qualified from the first semi-final, while Portugal and the United States booked their spot from the second.

Once again, the battle for the gold medal was between France and Portugal, with the former nation reigning supreme once again.

Peru took bronze and the US were left with the copper.

"Forty-seven nations came together from around the world to surf in this record-breaking ISA World Surfing Games for a phenomenal week of surfing and team camaraderie," ISA President Fernando Aguerre said.

"We are watching the sport grow before our eyes, with excellent surfers coming from all five continents and many new nations joining the international surfing family.

"In three years’ time, we will look back on this moment and remember which Olympians in Tokyo 2020 competed in this edition of the event."
