Ruth Jebet has won her second athletics gold medal in as many days at the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, after narrowly beating Turkey's Yasemin Can in the women's 5,000 metres final in Baku today.

The Bahraini clinched the 3,000m steeplechase title yesterday and returned to the Baku Olympic Stadium to double her personal tally.

Can, Jebet's training partner, launched an attack on the final lap but could not sustain her challenge as the Rio 2016 Olympic steeplechase champion pulled clear on the final straight to win in 14 mins 53.41sec.

Reigning European 5,000 and 10,000m champion Can took silver in 14:53.50 while Daria Maslova of Kyrgyzstan finished in third place in 15:00.42.

Ali Mohammed of the United Arab Emirates was initially announced as third place by the Organising Committee and on the big screen in the stadium before a photo finish reversed the result.

Oluwakemi Adekoya breezed into the women's 400m final as she continues her bid to win a second gold medal of the Games.

The Bahraini, who won 400m hurdles gold yesterday, ran 51.46sec to ease through her heat and into tomorrow's final.

Another Bahraini, Salwa Eid Naser, was the only athlete to get close to Adekoya's time.

She ran 51.94 to win her qualification race while Nigeria's Folasade Abigeal Abugan won the third.

Turkey's Eda Tugsuz clinched the women's javelin gold medal.

Tugsuz, who could only finish in 11th place in last year's European Championships in Amsterdam, threw an impressive 67.21m in the final to beat the Olympic-winning distance of 66.18m by Sara Kolak of Croatia at Rio 2016.

Iran's Sahar Ziaeisisakht was someway off in second place with 49.15m, while Turkey's Berivan Sakir took bronze with her best throw of 48.74m.

Syria won their first gold medal of the Games after boxer Hussin Almasri saw off Iraq's Hasan Naser in the light-flyweight final today.

Almasri landed a clean right hook in the first round to send Naser down but it was by a unanimous points decision that the Syrian clinched the gold at Baku's Crystal Hall.

Javid Chalabiyev of Azerbaijan was also victorious today as he won the men's lightweight final against Ammar Karbalai of Iraq.

In front of Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, Chalabiyev dominated the entire bout, securing gold for the host nation by unanimous decision.

Kazakhstan's Azat Mahmetov also won gold after he defeated Morocco's Abdelali Daraa in the flyweight final.

The Kazakh landed two jabs late on and was awarded the gold by split decision.

In the bantamweight final, Abdulkhay Sharakhmatov clinched gold for Uzbekistan as he proved too good for Turkmenistan's Yakub Meredov, scoring a points victory.

Elsewhere today, hosts Azerbaijan sealed their place in the final of the football tournament as they defeated Algeria 2-0 in the first semi-final.

Captain Ruslan Abishov opened the scoring as he headed home from a free-kick just before half time at the Dalga Arena.

Magsad Isayev added another on 60 minutes to seal the victory.

They will now face Oman in the final at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, where the bronze-medal match will also be held.

Oman defeated Cameroon in a penalty shoot-out following a scoreless match at the Dalga Arena.

In the pool, Iran's Mojtaba Valipour won the men's 3m springboard victory in the first diving final of the Games.

However, Valipour was forced to perform his sixth and final effort twice because of a technical issue.

It did not matter though as he defeated Indonesia's Aldiansyah Rafi with a score of 338.35 points.

Rafi took silver on 332.40 while Azerbaijan's Dmitriy Sorokin completed the top three on 331.25.
