Aldana Saad Almubarak claimed Qatar's first gold medal of the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games after winning the women's 25 metres pistol event at the Baku Shooting Centre today. 

The 24-year-old finished only fifth in qualifying  but proved too strong for the opposition in the final with a score of 28 points.

Iran's Haniyeh Rostamiyan came second with 23 points and three-time African champion Olfa Cherni of Tunisia third with 20.

Azerbaijan’s Irada Ashumova, an Olympic bronze medallist in the event at the Athens 2004, fell just short of a podium place with 18 points to the disappointment of the home crowd.

There was also shooting success today for Egypt's Ahmed Kamar, winner in the men's trap.

Kamar finished with 42 points, beating nearest challenger Oguzhan Tuzun of Turkey by a margin of three.

Qatar's Nasser Ali Al Hemaidi rounded out the podium with 33 points.

Bangladesh’s Sayeda Hasan and Abdullah Hel Baki took top honours in the mixed team 10m air rifle event after beating Iran's Najmeh Khedmati and Pourya Norouziyan 5-1 in the gold medal match.

Turkey’s Seymanur Koca and Omer Akgun claimed bronze after coming from behind to defeat Iran’s Narjes Emamgholi Nejad Andevari and Hossein Bagheri 5-4.

Hosts Azerbaijan’s Ruslan Lunev secured his second gold medal in as many days, thanks to victory in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol final.

Lunev, the winner yesterday’s men's 25m centre-fire pistol event, beat Oman’s Said Al Hashmi in a shoot-off and then came from behind in the final round to leapfrog Turkey's Murat Kilic.

The Azeri won with 21 points, one more than Kilic.

Hashmi earned bronze with 18 in his first international final.

Azerbaijan also topped the podium in the women’s artistic gymnastics team event, before Turkey followed suit in the men's competition.

The home nation sealed their women's team gold medal early in the session as they fended off Turkey to win by 3.25 points on 99.300 overall at the National Gymnastics Arena.

The Azeribaijani men put some pressure on Turkey, but the overnight leaders held their nerve in a thrilling finish to wrap up the title with a 1.75-point margin on 163.450.

Indonesia took the bronze in the women’s event by virtue of the fact that they were the only other team competing.

Iran completed the men’s podium with 152.150 points.

Further success came the home nation's way in the rhythmic gymnastics individual apparatus finals as Marina Durunda triumphed in the women's hoop and ribbon, and Zhala Piriyeva prevailed in the women's ball. 

Durunda posted 17.600 points in the hoop and was followed in the standings by Uzbekistan's Anastasiya Serdyukova with 16.450 and Piriyeva with 16.050. 

The two Azeris swapped positions in the ball with Piriyeva taking gold with 17.550 points and Durunda having to settle for bronze with 15.800.

Serdyukova was again sandwiched between them with 16.950 points. 

Durunda and Piriyeva finished tied on 15.450 points in the ribbon with the former claiming gold by virtue of a better execution mark.

Uzbekistan's Sabina Tashkenbaeva came third with 14.950 points. 

Serdyukova won the women's clubs with 16.900 points, while Durunda was second with 16.550 and Tashkenbaeva third with 16.300.

Turkey suffered defeat in both the men's and women's handball finals at the Sarhadchi Arena.

Their men's side lost 26-21 to Saudi Arabia, while their women's team lost 28-26 to Azerbaijan. 

Iraq beat Algeria 27-22 in the men's bronze medal match and Cameroon overcame Uzbekistan 35-27 in the women's equivalent.

Among the winners in today's judo action at the Heydar Aliyev Arena was Iran's Saeid Mollaei, who beat Turkey's Ilker Gulduren in the men's under 81 kilograms gold medal contest.

Azerbaijan's Mammadali Mehdiyev defeated Algeria's Abderrahmane Benamadi in the men's under 90kg final, while Uzbekistan's Gulnoza Matniyazova edged Turkey's Sukran Bakacak in the women's under 70kg showdown.
