Great Britain’s Samantha Kinghorn and Rachael Morrison of the United States smashed world records on the opening day of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix event in Arizona.

Wheelchair race Kinghorn set a new mark in the 200 metres T53 as the 21-year-old got round the track at the Joe Selleh Track and Field venue at Arizona State University in 28.67sec, shaing 0.26 off the previous record held by US athlete Jessica Galli five years ago.

She finished the race in front of Kelsey LeFevour of the US while Bermuda’s Jessica Lewis came third.

Later on in the day, Kinghorn also topped the 800m podium.

In the women’s club throw F51 competition, Morrison added 36cm to the record set by Briton Jo Butterfield at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games with a winning mark of 23.17m.

This means that Morrison has regained the world record which she lost to Butterfield.

However, she was unable to add a victory in the women’s discus event as fellow American Cassie Mitchell threw 12.85m to win.
