New Zealand Rugby League will not consider Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor for this year's World Cup after both players were accused of cocaine use.

Bromwich has stepped down as the Kiwi captain following the alleged incident which is said to have taken place in the early hours of Saturday (May 6).

On Friday (May 5), New Zealand had been beaten 30-12 by hosts Australia in the 2017 Anzac Test in Canberra.

"I can't express my disappointment enough in their actions in the early hours of Saturday morning," said New Zealand coach David Kidwell.

"We have values to uphold, they have broken my trust, their team-mates' trust and the trust of the New Zealand public.

"In our Te Iwi Kiwi house no-one is bigger than the team.

"Now we move forward and focus on the Rugby League World Cup."

Twenty-eight-year-old prop Bromwich plays for Australian side Melbourne Storm and featured in the 2013 World Cup Final where his country lost 34-2 to Australia.

Proctor, also 28, is on the books of Gold Coast Titans and plays on the second row.

New Zealand is one of three co-hosts of this year's World Cup alongside Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The tournament will be played between October 26 and December 2.

"New Zealand Rugby League 100 per cent backs the decision not to consider these two men," said NZRL chief executive Alex Hayton.

"We must uphold the values of the game.

"NZRL and the Kiwis will continue to work hard to ensure the people of New Zealand are proud to support our teams both on and off the field."
