United States bounced back from their shock opening day defeat at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Championships by overcoming Denmark at the LANXESS Arena in Cologne.

The American squad had been left stunned by hosts Germany on Friday (May 5), but looked to make amends following their day off yesterday.

Lee Anders and Clayton Keller struck earlier in the Group A match as the US began impressively, eventually ending the first period 3-1 ahead.

The scoreline was replicated in the second period as the US moved 6-2 clear, with Keller then scoring the only goal of the third to complete a hat-trick and a straightforward win.

Russia, the tournament second seeds, secured their second Group A victory earlier in the day as they thrashed Italy.

The Italian team had narrowly failed to win on their return to the top division yesterday, but they were outclassed by an impressive Russian side, who prevailed 10-1.

Latvia continued their strong start to the tournament as they earned a 3-1 win over Slovakia, with the team now having two wins from two.
