Great Britain endured a mixed final day of the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Sardinia as victory in the quads final was followed by a narrow men's defeat to France.

Both finals saw the eventual winners come from behind to claim victory in the decisive doubles at the Alghero Tennis Club.

In the men's event of the wheelchair tennis tournament, Alfie Hewett put Britain in front with a 6-3, 6-3 success over Nicolas Peifer.

Parity was restored in a clash between the world's top two ranked players.

French world number one Stephane Houdet triumphed 6-4, 6-3 against Gordon Reid.

Houdet then sparkled again by joining forces with Peifer to thrash Reid and Hewett 6-3, 6-0 in the doubles.

Belgium beat Poland 2-1 yesterday in the third place clash.

Britain had earlier come from a match down to defeat Israel and win a fifth quads event.

Noam Gershony beat James Shaw 6-1, 6-2 in the opening rubber before Andy Lapthorne inspired a fightback.

The Paralympic quad singles silver medallist overcame Shraga Weinberg by a similarly comfortable margin, 6-3, 6-1.

He then teamed up with Antony Cotterill to take victory in the conclusive doubles over Gershony and Weinberg, 6-3, 6-0.

"It's been a big team effort this week and it's amazing to win wearing the GB vest again," said Lapthorne.

"I'm also really pleased to end the week still unbeaten this year playing with Antony and we are looking forward to the challenges ahead."

United States sealed third place with a 2-0 victory over Japan.

It followed a shock 2-0 victory for China over The Netherlands in yesterday's women's final.
