Italy’s Viviana Bottaro continued her impressive form at the European Karate Championships today by helping her country reach the women’s team kata final in Kocaeli.

Having progressed through to the women's kata individual final yesterday, the 29-year-old joined forces with Sara Battaglia and Michela Pezzeti to beat both Portugal and defending champions Spain and earn a place in the title-deciding bout at the Şehit Polis Recep Topaloğlu Sports Hall.

Awaiting the 12-time continental medallist and her team-mates in the final are France’s Lila Bui, Marie Bui and Sandy Scordo, who beat Germany in the other semi-final.

Italy have also advanced through to the final of the men’s team kata competition after Mattia Busato, Alessandro Iodice and Alfredo Tocco claimed a split-decision win over Montenegro.

Standing between them and top honours are last year’s runners-up Jose Manuel Carbonell, Sergio Galan and Francisco Jose Salazar of Spain, who defeated Russia in the penultimate round.

Defending champions France are through to the men’s team kumite gold medal match after overcoming Croatia.

Hosts Turkey will look to avenge their defeat to the French in last year’s final having come through their semi-final encounter with Germany.

The home nation also ensured their representation in the women’s team kumite final, again at the expense of Germany.

Former world champion Serap Ozcelik will now be aiming to lead Turkey to victory over Ukraine, who upset reigning world champions France in the preliminary round and confirmed their place in the final with victory over Slovenia.

The first of two days of finals is due to take place tomorrow.
