FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura has claimed fans can expect a great experience at the Confederations Cup, due to take place later this year in Russia.

Samoura was speaking after a Board meeting between FIFA and Russia 2018, which saw discussions over preparations for Confederations Cup and next year’s FIFA World Cup.

The meeting was held at Saint Petersburg’s Krestovsky Stadium, due to host the World Cup semi-final and the Confederations Cup final.

A Russian Premier League match between Zenit Saint Petersburg and Ural Yekaterinburg took place on Sunday (April 23), with the hosts winning 2-0 in the Stadium’s first official match.

The arena was only partly full for the match because organisers decided not to open the top tier.

"I can see all the progress that has been made including this Stadium in Saint Petersburg where we are now," said Samoura at the 69,000-seater venue.

"We are working on technical details but I’m sure that the kick-off match will be a great experience for the fans in Russia and around the world.

"We can already announce that the match between Russia and Portugal in Moscow will be the full house - the tickets for this game are currently no longer available.

"It shows how popular the FIFA Confederations Cup is."

The Confederations Cup is due to begin at the venue on June 17, with matches also set to take place in Kazan, Moscow and Sochi during the tournament.

Russia will play New Zealand in the opening match at the Krestovsky Stadium.

Both nations have been placed into Group A when the draw was made in November, alongside European champions Portugal and Mexico, who lifted the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

World Cup holders Germany will go up against Copa América winners Chile, Asian Cup champions Australia and African Cup of Nations Cup winners Cameroon in Group B.

The final is scheduled to take place on July 2.

"We’ve got two different types of stadiums, two of them are new – in Sochi and Saint Petersburg; while the other two in Kazan and Moscow are long existing and fully operational facilities," Colin Smith, FIFA chief competitions and events officer, said.

"In Saint Petersburg the first test of the stadium in the football mode was last Saturday when Zenit played its home match here and generally it went well.

"There are key aspects that will be studied by both FIFA and the Local Organising Committee.

"There have been talks about the pitch, it coped well as it’s a very young pitch.

"It will certainly be in even better condition for the next match.

"We are sure that it will be a top class pitch in June when the FIFA Confederations Cup takes place.”

Pavel Kolobkov, Russian Sports Minister, has vowed to step-up security following a terrorist attack earlier this month in Saint Petersburg.

A device hidden in a briefcase triggered an explosion on the metro line on April 3, killing 14 and leaving a further 45 injured.
