Paralympic champion Alessandro Rodrigo broke the men's F11 discus world record on home soil to take gold at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in São Paulo.

Rodrigo surpassed the previous mark of 44.44 metres, set by Spain's Alfonso Lopes-Fidalgo in 1998, with a throw of 44.66m at the Brazilian Paralympic Training Centre.

He finished at the summit of a Brazilian-dominated podium as team-mate Marcio Silva Leite claimed silver with a best attempt of 35.58m, while bronze went the way of Marcos Antonio Lopes as he threw 27.60m.

The result also saw Rodrigo secure a place on the Brazilian team at the July’s World Para Athletics Championships in London.

There was further success for the host nation as Petrucio Ferreira, the current Paralympic 100m champion, clocked a world-leading time of 21.66sec to win gold in the 200m T47 event.

Ricardo Costa Oliveira, another reigning Paralympic champion from Brazil, leapt to gold in the men's T11 long jump as he recorded a best attempt of 6.51m.

He beat Argentinian rival Oscar Alexis Acosta, who had to settle for silver on 5.61m.

Emerson dos Santos Lopes delighted the home crowd with a Brazilian record of 46.14m to secure victory in the men's F46 discus.

Compatriot Joao Luis dos Santos finished second on 44.29m, with Argentina's Juan Pablo Aznarez taking bronze having thrown 25.16m.

Brazil earned another podium sweep in the women's 200m T11 as Thalita Da Silva crossed the line in 25.43 to clinch the gold medal.

Lorena Spoladore was not far behind in second place as she clocked 25.54, with Jerusa Dos Santos a further 0.07 adrift in third place.

Competition at the third World Para Athletics Grand Prix of the season is due to conclude tomorrow.
