The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) has honoured Aikpa Aime, the man who introduced the martial art to the African country.

Aime was recognised at a reception at the NTF secretariat at the National Stadium in Lagos.

Gideon Akinsola, the NTF's chairman for media and publicity, told This Day: "The NTF led by George Ashiru and the Board members are proud to honour the man who first introduced taekwondo to Nigeria in 1975.

"Grandmaster Aime later left Nigeria and sojourned in Europe for more than 40 years and no contact was established with him since these years.

"He recently returned to Nigeria in April and the NTF deemed it fit to recognise and celebrate this living legend with a warm reception."

Nigeria has won one Olympic taekwondo medal in its history.

Chika Chukwumerije won one of the two bronze medal matches against Uzbekistan's Akmal Irgashev in the over-80 kilogram category at Beijing 2008.

Chukwumerije also won the All-Africa Games title in Algiers in 2007.

However, recent success has been limited with Nigeria not represented at Rio 2016 despite qualifying a competitor for the three Olympics prior to that.

The country's team failed to perform to expectations at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Morocco in February 2016.

As a result, a new competition was launched in a bid to find fresh talent.
