Apeldoorn will stage the 2018 International Cycling Union (UCI) Track World Championships, the governing body have confirmed.

It will be a swift return for the Championships to the Omnisport Apeldoorn velodrome, with the Dutch venue having held the Championships back in 2011.

The 5,000 seater arena hosted the second round of this season’s UCI Track Cycling World Cup, where a new 250 metre track was unveiled.

Apeldoorn also staged the Para-cycling Track World Championships back in 2015.

Competition will be held from February 28 to March.

The UCI have also confirmed that Montichiari in Italy will host the 2017 Junior Track Cycling World Championships.

It will be the second time the town has acted at the venue for the competition, having welcomed the event back in 2010.

Competition will be held from August 23 to 27.

The announcement comes at the conclusion of this year’s Track World Championships in Hong Kong, which were only the second edition to have been held in Asia.

The governing body have hailed the unprecedented level of participation for a post-Olympic year, with 41 nations and 344 athletes competing in the senior level event.

Women’s madison made its World Championship debut to provide full gender equality in events, with the discipline currently being considered for potential inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Malaysia were also able to celebrate their first gold medal at the Championships, with Awang Azizulhasni making history for the country by winning the men’s keirin.
