Kenya will return to the scene of last year's historic triumph during this weekend's World Rugby Sevens Series event in Singapore.

The African nation won their first-ever Series tournament at the corresponding competition in 2016 with victory over Fiji in the final and they are back to defend their title at the National Stadium.

Kenya have been drawn in Pool C, along with Australia, Argentina and Samoa for this year's Singapore Sevens, which gets underway tomorrow.

"It was a very special win for us," said Kenyan star Collins Injera.

"I’ve been playing in the Series for a long time now and this is my ninth year.

"Going into the tournament we were confident we could do well but having never won a tournament before, we had no expectations of that sort.

"To win on the World Series, you have to beat six quality teams to take home the trophy so a lot of things have to go your way.

"For us, we just had that extra bit of motivation, we played as a team and would do anything for each other."

Olympic champions Fiji arrive at the event in Singapore aiming to clinch a second straight title having won the Hong Kong Sevens last week.

The Pacific nation will face Canada, Russia and Hong Kong in Pool A.

Their success in Hong Kong saw them cut South Africa's lead at the top of the overall standings to 23 points.

The Blitzboks will be hoping to bounce back from their loss at the hands of Fiji in the final with victory in Singapore.

South Africa are scheduled to go up against England, France and Japan in Pool C.

"Fiji played phenomenal rugby in the final and we weren't up for it – we made too many mistakes," South Africa captain Philip Snyman said.

"A lot of homework needs to be done ahead of this weekend.

“We’re not focusing on the end result right now, even though it’s our goal to win the series, but for us we’re only looking at Singapore and doing the basics well."

Pool D is comprised of the United States, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.

The Singapore Sevens is the eighth stop on the series calendar.
