The National Olympic Committee of Cape Verde (COC) held a workshop on the topic of female leadership in sport.

The three-day event involved representatives from every island of the African country, as well as other nations from zone two of the Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).

Cape Verde Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva was among those to attend, with the politician pointing out the importance of equity in sport in the country.

Filomena Fortes, the President of the COC, was also in attendance.

The aim of the workshop was to empower women to obtain leadership positions in sport.

This topic is being championed by Cristina Ferreira, who chairs the COC's Women and Sports Commission.

Before the workshop, the COC had already arranged a Women and Sport Forum which aimed to share experiences and find solutions to increase female participation in sport.

Cape Verde has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games held since 1996, although they have never won an Olympic medal.

A five-strong team competed in the sports of athletics, boxing, rhythmic gymnastics and taekwondo at Rio 2016.

The country has reportedly received approval to host the first African Beach Games in 2019.

Final approval must still be given at the ANOCA General Assembly scheduled for Djibouti in May.

In October, the country will host a secretary generals seminar of ANOCA.
