Olympic boxer Natasha Jonas has announced she will be coming out of retirement to turn professional.

The 32-year-old became the first female fighter to compete for Britain at the Olympic Games at London 2012, when she beat American Quanitta Underwood in the opening round of the lightweight division.

She then lost to Ireland's eventual gold medallist Katie Taylor in the quarter-finals.

Jonas, who won World Championship bronze in Chinese city Qinhuangdao in 2012, announced her retirement in 2015, which ruled her out of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

She told the BBC at the time that she no longer had the "hunger and dedication" for boxing.

However, she has now reversed that decision and has targeted taking revenge on Taylor, who has now also joined the professional ranks.

"The opportunity is here now to go on to something different," Jonas told The Times.

"When I said goodbye to amateur boxing I was saying goodbye to everything.

"There was no other door to go through.

"You could become a pro and work in Germany but that was not for me - I wanted to be here.

"Now, big promoters like Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren are signing females and putting them on big shows.

"It opens another door and gives women another option.

"It's been nice to see her [Taylor] doing well and putting women's boxing on the map.

"To follow on from that it would be amazing to have a female super-fight in Britain for a world title.

"It broke my heart to lose to her in London.

"The best lady will win at the end of the day."

Jonas' compatriot Nicola Adams, a double Olympic champion at flyweight, made her professional debut on Saturday (April 8).

She beat Argentina's Virginia Carcamo on points at Manchester Arena.
