United World Wrestling (UWW) has approved a new method of seeding in each freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's weight category for the sport's 2017 World Championships in Paris.

The new method of seeding is based on the results of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the 2016 World Championship for non-Olympic weights in Budapest and this year's various Continental Championships.

Winning an Olympic gold medal or World Championship event sees wrestlers earn 25 ranking points.

Points then decrease by five for every position below first, with second earning 20, joint-third 15 and fifth 10.

Seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th will then be awarded eight, six, four and two points respectively.

Continental Championships see fewer points awarded to competitors.

Winners have been given 12 with each position below that dropping by two points each time.

Only those that finish in the top eight of the three events have received points.

The number of participants in each event also affected the seedings, with bonus points on offer for winners of competitions with more wrestlers involved.

For instance, if at 70 kilograms, there were 40 participants at the World Championships, the world champion would receive 65 points.

This is worked out by adding 40 points, one point for each competitor, to the initial tally of 25.

The 2017 World Wrestling Championships are due to take place in the French capital at the AccordHotels Arena between August 21 and 26.
