Volunteer registration for the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships is now officially open as organisers seek to fill more than 2,000 positions.

The first phase of the process is set to run through to June 30, with organisers already receiving 1,800 pre-registration applications.

Available roles cover transportation, visitor services, accommodation, accreditation and media.

The event is part of the inaugural multi-sport European Championships, which will also see continental competitions held in six other sports at the same time in Scottish city Glasgow.

Following the conclusion of the first application phase, personal interviews will take place until October with volunteers set to be confirmed by the end of the year.

Prospective volunteers must be 18 years of age or over.

Throughout the process Berlin 2018 will be working with SOLID Event Management and Consulting.

The company played a key role in the delivery of the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games and provided consultation for volunteer management at major events such as this year's International Ski Federation Alpine World Championships in St Moritz in Switzerland.

"The volunteer programme has a very high priority in our preparations," said Frank Kowalski, managing director of Berlin 2018.

"Our volunteers will be the face of this European Athletics Championships throughout the city and in the stadium.

"Especially here in Berlin they are sure to bring a great feel-good factor to visitors and athletes in Berlin."

The European Championships will see existing continental competitions in aquatics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon held in Glasgow.

Athletics will take place at the Olympiastadion in the German capital.

As part of the inaugural event, around 3,000 athletes are due to compete in Scotland between August 2 and 12.

A further 1,500 athletes will compete in Berlin.

It is hoped the quadrennial showpiece will elevate the status of European champions and attract a potential television audience of up to 1.03 billion across the continent, with a wider audience via digital platforms.

The Glasgow 2018 volunteer programme was launched on March 27 and within one day organisers had received 2,150 applications.
