Lin Dan defeated perennial rival Lee Chong Wei to deny the home hopeful a 12th men's singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Super Series.

The final at the Perpaduan Stadium in Kuching paired together two of the sport's heavyweights and it was China's Lin who overcame Malaysia's Lee, the top seed.

The eighth seed triumphed 21-19, 21-14 to send the crowd home unhappy.

It was a repeat of the Olympic finals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 which were both won by Lin.

The Chinese player also defeated Lee - who also won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympics - in the finals of the 2011 and 2013 World Championships.

In the women's final, a titanic contest between the top two seeds went the way of Chinese Taipei's top-ranked contender Tai Tzu-ying.

The world number one beat Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin in three games, 23-25, 22-20, 21-13.

Three doubles titles were also decided today with Indonesia's Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo clinching the men's crown.

The fourth seeds defeated China's Fu Haifeng and Zheng Siwei in three games, 21-14, 14-21, 21-12.

In the women's doubles, an unseeded final was won by Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota who beat China's Huang Yaqiong and Tang Jinhua 21-17, 18-21, 21-12.

Huang returned in the mixed doubles final but was again defeated, losing 21-15, 21-18 alongside Lu Kai to compatriots and top seeds Zheng Siwei
