"The Women’s Olympic Festival is an event that gives continuity to the development of women with special attention," said Sara Rosario Vélez, the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee President.

"The call is for girls from seven years of age to [become] representatives of our national adult selections.

"This edition will be special because we come from an Olympic cycle where the woman stood out on a sports and administrative level.

"It is a motivation that inspires us to pass on to the next generations."

Vélez officially opened the Festival, which saw representatives of 27 various sports from the Olympic Movement.

It is claimed that the event represents the young and future athletes of Puerto Rico.

Monica Puig became the first Puerto Rican to win an Olympic gold medal in the women's tennis competition at Rio 2016 in August.
