Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin knocked out defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand on quarter-finals day at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Super Series.

The Rio 2016 gold medallist and second seed came through in three games against Intanon at the Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching.

Marin eased to the first game but things got trickier before she saw out a 21-8, 18-21, 21-12 success.

She will now meet Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the last four, who beat her fourth-seeded compatriot Akane Yamaguchi 21-18, 22-20.

Chinese Taipei's top seed Tai Tzu-ying had to battle through against China's Chen Yufei, eventually winning 21-17, 20-22, 24-22.

Her reward is a date with third seed Sung Ji-hyun of South Korea, who ousted China's Sun Yu 21-11, 21-15.
