Anastasiia Romanova was in dominant form today at the European Weightlifting Championships as she won women’s 69 kilogram gold at the Arena Gripe in Split.

The Russian topped the ranks in the snatch round before repeating the feat in the clean and jerk to ensure she earned the title in the Croatian city.

She began with a best lift of 112kg in the snatch, getting the job done on her third effort.

Even if she had failed, Romanova would still have been on top as her second best lift of 107kg was seven kilograms higher than her nearest rival, Great Britain’s Rebekah Tiler.

Romanova then completed a lift of 131kg in the clean and jerk to give her a combined weight of 243kg.

This put her 18kg ahead of the rest of the competition, with Ukraine’s Mariya Khlyan coming second.

Anastasiya Mikhalenka of Belarus rounded off the podium, just edging past last year’s bronze medallist Tiler by 1kg.

On the men’s side of the competition, the 77kg category was contested.

Romania’s Dumitru Captari put together lifts of 160kg in the snatch and 200kg in the clean and jerk to claim the overall title.

His victory margin was 12kg over fellow Romanian and London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Razvan Martin.

Third place went to Albania’s Erkand Qerimaj, winner at the 2014 Championships in Tel Aviv.

Action continues tomorrow in Split with the men’s 85kg and women’s 75kg.

The competition is due to continue until Saturday (April 8).
