Switzerland and Sweden have kept pressure on Canada at the World Curling Federation (WCF) Men’s World Championship in Edmonton following the third day of action.

The Swiss team ended today’s sessions with a thumping 9-2 win over Russia with just six ends needed to complete the task in the Northlands Coliseum.

In the morning session, they had scored another victory as they defeated neighbours Germany 7-4 and they now sit behind Canada in the round robin stage with four wins and a loss.

This record is matched by Sweden, bronze medallists from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, after they beat Norway 8-6 this morning before winning 8-5 against Japan in the afternoon.

However, Canada remain on top of the table after maintaining their unbeaten record at the tournament.

Playing in the afternoon and evening sessions, the hosts won 8-2 in both matches, the first against Scotland before repeating the score over the United States.

But despite still being behind the Canadians, Swiss skip Peter De Cruz said he is happy with how his team is performing so far.

“I think we’ve been playing better and better,” he said.

“There’s just a couple of things we have to adjust but overall happy where we are at now and hope we can just fix a couple of little things.”

Another country who managed to win twice today was China, who defeated Scotland 9-7 before seeing off The Netherlands 9-3.

Italy had a mixed day on the ice as they started proceedings with a 8-6 loss to the US, but were able to turn their fortunes round in the evening with a 13-6 victory against The Netherlands.

The day’s other games saw Norway beat Russia 5-3 and Japan win 7-4 against Germany.

Action is due to continue at the championships until Sunday (April 9).
