France's Gregory Gaultier has become the oldest player to reach the top of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) world rankings.

The former world champion has climbed above Egypt's Mohamed Elshorbagy at the age of 34 years and three months.

Australia's Sarah Fitz-Gerald held the previous record, with Gaultier breaking it by just a month.

Fitz-Gerald last topped the women's rankings in February 2003.

Gaultier's rise to the top of the men's chart comes after he won three tournaments in a row - the Swedish Open, the Windy City Open and the British Open.

His current unbeaten run of 14 matches is the longest of his career.

"To be number one as well again at my age is an amazing feeling - it’s pure pleasure," said Gaultier.

Egypt's Karim Abdel Gaward is second in the rankings, just 24 points behind.

He would have gone to the top had he made the quarter finals at the British Open or if the Frenchman had not won the title.

Elshorbagy has now slipped to third, his lowest position since September 2014.

England's British Open runner-up Nick Matthew is fourth with Mohamed's brother Marawn Elshorbagy up into the top five for the first time in his career.
