The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has announced that the 2017 World Team Disc Golf Championships have been sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).

The Championships will be held between August 23 and 26 on the Classic Course at the University of Essex in Colchester in England.

Colchester previously hosted the 2012 European Disc Golf Championships, with the course undergoing a redesign.

New baskets have been secured to host the world team event.

It will be the second edition of the Championships, which will see 24 countries competing across four divisions.

The WFDF revealed teams will have the option to bring as many as 12 players to help keep their teams fresh, with six designated to play in each round.

"Following the successful debut of this event in 2016 in Vancouver in Canada, the WFDF is aiming to attract as many as 24 countries to compete for the chance to be crowned world team champions this year," said Brian Hoeniger, PDGA international director.

"The PDGA wishes the WFDF, Disc Zoo and the tournament Organising Committee all possible success in the organisation and delivery of the 2017 World Team Championships, and looks forward to collaborating with future editions of this prestigious event."

Team registration for the event has been extended to June 9 following "considerable interest" from many countries that have asked for an extension.

The WFDF has claimed the competition has already "attracted interest" from 15 teams from Europe, North America, Africa and Asia, with a further five teams from Europe and South America still expected to register.

Disc golf is the flying disc variant of the game of golf, where players traverse a course making as few throws as possible.

The United States are the defending champions after they defeated New Zealand in last year's final held in Vancouver.

"WFDF is excited to see the expansion of the World Team Disc Golf Championships this year and we appreciate the support of PDGA and host Disc Zoo," added WFDF President Robert Rauch.

"We encourage maximum participation to more fully develop true World Championship participation for the exciting and fast growing sport of disc golf."
