Charity LimbPower has announced that their Children’s Activity Prosthetic Fund will be supplying around 70 children with activity limbs by the end of this month.

The organisation was launched in November 2009 to engage amputees and individuals with limb impairments in physical activity and sport.

During the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the British Government announced that £1.5 million ($1.8 million/€1.7 million) would be released for children’s activity prosthetic limbs.

The donation was split in two with £750,000 ($930,000/€865,000) allocated to providing children up to the age of 18 with prostheses and components.

A second £750,000 ($930,000/€865,000) was invested into research to identify what children and their families want from their prosthetic service and how this can be delivered.

National Health Service limb centres across the country have been prescribing activity prostheses for children since October 2016, with over 50 children already receiving them.

It is anticipated that a total of 70 children will have been issued with the devices by the end of this month.

The current trial fund is open to application until the end of March 2018.

LimbPower are hopeful that the response to the availability of children’s activity prostheses coupled with the results research taking place will lead to an extension of this trial or see it become permanent option for children with limb differences.
