The Ukrainian eased through qualification on Wednesday (March 22), but sought to assert his authority on the competition in the final.

Tymoshchenko began the event in fine fashion by winning the fencing discipline, but the field reduced his advantage in the swimming event, where he only ended 30th.

He headed into the final event at the top of the standings on 834 points, having finished the riding discipline in 10th position.

Having started in the lead, the 2015 world champion was able to keep his rivals at bay by finishing the combined laser-run in a time of 11min 54.04sec.

It gave him a winning tally of 1,420 points in the second event of the UIPM World Cup season.

World number one Valetin Prades had closed dramatically on Tymoshchenko in the combined event, with the Frenchman winning the discipline in 11:20.10.

Prades ultimately came up short, ending 12 points behind the winner on a total of 1,408.

The podium positions were completed by Fabian Liebig on 1,407 points, with the German finishing four clear of Russia’s Alexander Savkin.

The women’s final is due to take place tomorrow, before the mixed relay draws the World Cup to a close on Sunday (March 26).

Egypt are holding the event ahead of the country staging the World Championships later this year in Cairo.
